MAKING YOUR OWN PENS...

When I worked at The Smithsonian we were encouraged to use unusual materials, and had to sharpen, make and care for our own pens.  Some people used "Rotring" pens, which were the expensive version of throw away technical pens.  They clogged all the time, and were a nightmare.  I tended to use the quill type metal and real quills, and it didn't take that much extra effort to do it.  Much less time than taking the Rotring apart and then putting them back together a number of times to get them to work perfectly.

In April I am going to start teaching others how to be self sufficient.  How to make their own pens, own inks... even scratchboard paper.  Most everything can be hand crafted, and I think it is the perfect time to learn how.

Here are some new pens I made last nite.

I will show you the resulting lines when I have practised with them.  I have some beautiful dark ink I made with the walnuts I gathered (also made pickles and sauce), and am going to explore soot.  I am hoping for someone who burns pine on a regular basis because pine soot makes the best ink. Just ask the Japanese, it is what they make the ink sticks out of.
